Design Intern ~
The task
- You will contribute to real projects we're developing at Onnix Media.
- We are primarily working on web applications but you will also do mobile application work, branding, and possibly even print work.
- Design at Onnix Media involves making product decisions, wire-framing, copywriting, visual designing, and coding. We expect you to be involved in all parts of the design process.
- You will be here to learn and to work. We won't drive you into the ground, but we expect you to work as hard as the rest of our small team.
- The whole team at Onnix Media is four people. Design is currently done by one person. You will not be sitting ignored in a corner.
The skills
- Passion for user experience design and a willingness to learn are crucial for this position.
- As an intern we do not expect you to walk in the door with a full suite of expert skills.
- We hope that you have a decent knowledge of Photoshop or other image editing tools.
- We expect that you know some HTML and CSS.
- We hope you've messed around with some mobile interfaces. If not, we insist that you're excited to research the heck out of the subject before you start.
The portfolio
- The portfolio is the most important part of your application.
- We want to see as much of your best work as possible. Don't include projects you're not proud of. But do include a wide breadth of work if you can.
- Mobile design, web design, branding, print design, information architecture flows, reports, etc. would all be appropriate.
- Examples of work that accentuate your problem-solving abilities are most important.
- Annotated portfolios are ideal. Tell us what you were trying to achieve, why specific choices were made, where difficulties were encountered, and what your specific role in the project was.
- Visual comps are good, coded examples are best.
- Web-based portfolios with links to real work are wonderful, web-based portfolios with visual examples are fine, and PDF portfolios will still be considered.
The basics
- Yes, you need a portfolio of work that we can look at. Commercial work is not required.
- No, you don't need any formal education but a formal education won't hurt your chances.
- Yes, this is a paid internship. No, we won't pay you a zillion dollars; think closer to minimum wage/contract based. Remember, this is an internship.
- Yes, you already need to be able to work legally in the US of A (sorry Brits).
- Yes, this position can be remote, but local to Seattle, WA is preferred.
- No, age does not make a difference. You could be a senior citizen or a high school senior.
The application
- A cover letter is nice, but don't kill yourself crafting the perfect letter. Be to-the-point about what you expect to get out of the internship and why you're our ideal candidate.
- A resume would be useful, but is not the primary means of choosing a candidate. Again, be concise.
- Take your time preparing your portfolio. No extra points are given for speed.
- Email your application to jer@onnixmedia.com and address it to Jeremy Anderson.
